As a parent, sometimes you may be confused about the school to take your child to when he attains the age of going to school. You may have to choose between a private school and a public school. Before you decide, it is important to really know how do private schools differ from public schools.

Both schools offer either boarding school facilities or day school facilities. Other schools are meant for boys alone while others are meant for girls alone. A lot of these schools are mixed. They both offer primary education plus secondary education.

A public school is normally owned and also run by the government. It means that the government sets the curriculum and the school has to strictly follow it. Although this is quite in order, sometimes it may be rather limiting. The school management is not free to alter the curriculum to cater for the needs of every student.

Each public school enrolls all the students who seek admission because it is government funded. Due to this, overcrowding in the classrooms may occur. This means that teachers might not give individual attention to students. As a result, education standards may be compromised.

Due to the high number of students in these schools, the facilities may become overstretched. Some schools may also be underfunded. This may interfere with learning and also the out-of-class activities. Talented students may therefore not be able to explore their talents fully.

Private schools are run and owned by private entrepreneurs. They have therefore to fund themselves. They may get funds from alumni society, charging tuition fees and may also look for funds from corporations among others. They therefore plan the school activities depending on available funds. As a result they are able to maintain a high standard.

Since they are privately owned, their curriculum is designed to suit the requirements of the students. Their curriculum may therefore be more advanced and highly specialized. Some of these schools design a program for every individual student. They aspire to produce a student who is all-round. That is why various extra curricular activities are offered to enable every student to discover his talents.

These schools select freely the number of children they want to admit. Majority of them therefore have classes that are small to balance the ratio of student/teacher. The performance of pupils is thus enhanced since the teachers are able to give them personalized attention.

After school tutoring is also provided by some of the schools. Others may offer summer school, evening school and weekend school. All this is done to improve the performance of students. They usually employ teachers who have an advanced degree in the subject they specialize in. Students in such schools therefore excel in their studies.

Such schools also offer on-going guidance to students about career and prepare them for success in college or university. They also teach life skills like interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and time management skills among others. They therefore prepare children for life.

These are just a few answers of how do private schools differ from public schools. There are many other differences depending on each school. This explanation should come in handy when selecting a school.
