So you are looking through listings of private schools. Why is that? If you think this would be the end of your child’s trips to the Principal’s office and getting sent home for causing a ruckus on campus, then you are sorely mistaken. Remember that you want to give your child a brighter future, not save yourself and his teachers from stress and anxiety.
Scores upon scores of parents send their children to this particular kind of school because they want them to avoid the evils (and some may be necessary) of everyday teenage life. But did you not know that that’s not going to help any as your teens may encounter them anyway?
Drugs, alcohol, sex, and other teen pressures will happen no matter where they go and what they do. The temptations of sex, drugs and alcohol were there during your teens and they are definitely there in this generation, and instead of using private school as a shield for these things, why not evaluate whether it is the right educational environment or not.
When Is The Right Time?
Before you stick young Jimmy, Bobby or Katie in that tony private school your neighbor told you about, ask yourself a few questions first:
Do you feel that the school that they are currently in is not capable of providing the academics that you feel are necessary for your child?
Ask yourself whether your teen’s school (or the places he/she hangs out in) are too dangerous, despite the talks about peer pressure you should have had by now.
Ask yourself whether your child might consider private school the equivalent of being sent to prison, or whether he/she would understand that this is to make him/her a better student.
Does the private school provide for the academics you need your child to have, the type of discipline that you believe in and the means to enforce it?
Would you still be committed to being the first person your teens turn to when they run into trouble, even if they’re several miles away?
What do you really want to accomplish from the private setting? Does this accomplish your goals?
Deciding whether to enroll your turbulent teenagers in a private school or not is not a decision made overnight. Face it, most every school has its own bunch of rotten apples and bad crowds plying temptation with their every move. If you talk this over with your better half, your child and your child’s teachers, you should be able to make an informed decision.
